July 2025 Newsletter

Hello, and welcome to all the new subscribers who have come here from Patreon. That site keeps screwing me over, and I'm so glad to have spent time building this space. Thank you all for being here.

For those of you in the print club, please make sure your addresses are correct. They will be going out soon. Once again I am reminding you that prints go out every 3 months, not every month. You get 3 prints, just not sent every month. This saves me tons of time and postage.

I just got back from Chicago after going there for CAKE and then spending a few more days in the city I love. CAKE was wonderful as always. It remains my favorite comic festival. When I show up at CAKE, I feel like this:

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, even if you didn't buy anything. Getting feedback on my work is so vital. This current internet age has a lot of folks shy about leaving comments for some reason, but this is how we artists get some energy back after we spend so much of it creating our work.

I also love Chicago for the fact that you can find an expert in anything while you're there. I'm working on building a custom glass lamp, and I got to talk to an expert with 50 years of experience about his methods. How cool is that? To me, 20 minutes in person with an expert is better then 20 hours of YouTube videos. I learned a lot. Now I just need to scavenge for broken lamps at thrift stores so I can frankenstein something together.

While I was in Chicago, I had a bit of down time, and I finished the second draft of my next book! It's called Skip to the Recipe, about a woman who loses her mind and kills her family while blogging about it, but nobody notices because it's a recipe blog and everyone just skips to the recipe. I'm extremely proud of it. It's very horrific and full of body horror.

In other news, I'll be closing my brick and mortar store in Michigan at the end of the summer. It's bittersweet. On the one hand, I was already feeling like it was time to move on, but on the other, I wanted it to be my own decision rather than the landlord's who thinks we're satanic and won't renew our lease. But it was the kick in the pants to realize it was time for a change. Last year was hard on every art-based business, and this year has been drastically worse. The economy is heading towards a depression, and nobody has money for art. Not to mention how AI is just ruining things. I'll still have my online store, and most likely will be having a sale in August to get rid of the stuff that won't fit in my house.

I have to be responsible and cautious right now, which means I need some W2 income. Luckily, the cheese shop I used to work for an hour away is opening a new location five minutes away, and I am going to work there! I've done a lot this year to take care of my health and get my body stronger, and I think I'm ready for an active job with heavy wheels of Gouda.

Speaking of cheese, I got a new kitten and named her Mimolette after the cheese! She is the most rambunctious pet I've ever had. I love her so much. She's already doubled in size since we got her a month ago.

It's weird to have so much good stuff happening in my personal life while I've never been in more political danger. I try not to let myself become paralyzed with fear. Honestly, working on Magical Women has helped me a lot with remembering that while we did not choose to have to fight this fight, we will. We are all chosen ones. I am focused far less on my personal survival than on community survival. Things could get better or they could get worse, but what I'm not gonna do is spend my limited time on earth in despair.

For other folks trying to have a fun summer, I have two new fabric designs. You can find them on Spoonflower to make your own stuff, or grab some ready made gear in my shop.

Okay, time for me to get back to making comics. The queerest, smuttiest comics you can imagine.

I'm sad to hear that the brick and mortar store is closing. You were so excited when you were able to get it opened! ((Also to the landlords - what's wrong with Satanists, huh? Some of the sweetest people I've ever met were Satanists. Not that Ro is a Satanist, but c'mon that's still religious (and probably also gender/sexual orientation) discrimination which is illegal.))

I'm excited to order some swim suits and a skirt this July once one of my larger paychecks come in. Here in San Diego we celebrate Pride in July and I really wanna get a pink triangle skirt to wear while I work at the San Diego Public Library Makerspace booth again this year.
