Dorothea smoked a cigarette through red painted lips, blowing smoke rings into the air. “We should talk about the terms of your residence here.”
“My residence? I’m only staying for one night. Well, maybe one more.” Val’s head was pounding as she drank her morning tea at three in the afternoon.
“We both know you’d rather stay with me here. I can see it in your eyes. You always look so disappointed whenever you leave Ravenswood.” It was true, but Val hadn’t thought she was that obvious about it.
“Well…” Val admitted, “I suppose I could stay for a little while. Just while I get back on my feet. I need to look for a job, and an apartment. It shouldn’t take long. And while I’m here, I’ll keep fixing things as best as I’m able. My father taught me plenty. And I can clean–”
“Nonsense. You’re here as my guest. I won’t have you lifting a finger. Besides, Louisa handles the cleaning already.”
