Cruel Muse Chapter Six

The rest of the week went more smoothly, and the weekend was Val’s to use as she pleased. Jane had invited her over. Though it was just a casual lunch, Val wore a knee-length, full skirted taffeta dress, dark blue with pink flowers. She relished in the feel of nylon stockings sliding up her legs, clipped into her garters and nestled into pink satin heels with bows on the toes. She wore her hair down, and completed her look with eyeshadow #44 “Coconut” and lipstick #10 “Petal Paradise.” She wished she could afford the sort of makeup Dorothea wore, but at least she got to have a day to dress up nice.


Val rang the doorbell and was greeted by the friendly, freckled face of her pal. A cigarette hung from her lips, and her checkered shirt was untucked from her blue jeans. She wore no makeup aside from the remnants of yesterday’s work mascara.


“You look gorgeous, babe!” Jane cried, wrapping her friend in a big bear hug that lifted her feet off the porch. “Now, get inside before the neighbors see me so uncoiffed.”
